Measles exposure sites listed in Sydney after infected traveller flies from Gold Coast

Health authorities are urging people in parts of New South Wales and Queensland to monitor for measles symptoms after a person with a confirmed case of the highly infectious virus travelled interstate.

NSW Health said the adult boarded a plane on the Gold Coast and flew to Sydney on 7 February before travelling from central Sydney to Lane Cove and then to Haymarket on 10 February.

Tracing is under way in Queensland, where Gold Coast Health confirmed it is looking into potential exposure sites.

The individual recently returned from south-east Asia, where there are ongoing measles outbreaks in several countries, NSW Health said.

The case is not connected to a measles case in northern NSW which was confirmed earlier this week.

Man charged after allegedly shooting car door during road rage clash while on bail

A man accused of firing a gun into the side of a car during a road rage incident on the Gold Coast will face court today after being arrested in NSW. Queensland police put out a warrant for Oxenford man Saleh Atasoy, 37, following the alleged incident in Mermaid Waters on November 24. He was allegedly on bail and wearing an electronic monitoring device when he pulled out a handgun and fired into the side of a Ford Ranger during an altercation with the ute’s 53-year-old driver that afternoon. When the warrant was issued, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Garrett alleged the Ranger driver saw an “extremely agitated” Atasoy driving erratically, weaving in and out between cars. “He eventually cut in front of (the victim) at the large roundabout, the drivers exchanged heated words,” Garrett alleged. “However, during that, the driver produced a handgun, pointed it directly at the driver of the other vehicle. “We believe that firearm was discharged and it struck the victim’s car, putting a bullet hole into the rear door on the driver’s side.”

Residents’ outrage prompts Anglicare to abandon successful refuge for youth offenders

A Queensland support service says it will increase its focus on youth outreach after it was forced to abandon a Gold Coast-based support home.

Anglicare Southern Queensland had been running its Intensive Bail Initiative in Southport for about two years without the proper council approvals.

When they attempted to fix the issue with a development application, the public notification sparked public outrage with roughly 300 letters in opposition.

Anglicare program manager Tahnee Ledgerwood said she was saddened about the decision to close down.

“The reality is, as [a] young person said, ‘I wish they would understand that we don’t commit crimes in that area because of you’,” she said.

Dangerous thunderstorms sweep across south-east Queensland with solid rainfall but no sign of hail

South-east Queensland has escaped relatively unscathed following multiple warnings of giant hail and intense rainfall as a trough in the west reached the coast late on Wednesday.

At 6:04pm, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warned a “very dangerous” thunderstorm cell was near Burpengary, north of Brisbane, moving east toward Moreton Bay and Caboolture.

By 6:30pm, the storm was no longer deemed dangerous and was moving over Bribie Island and out to sea.

Further south, a separate severe storm cell brought heavy rain to parts of Logan and the Gold Coast late in the afternoon.

By 6:30pm, there had been no reports of hail or property damage.

Just before 7pm, the severe thunderstorm warnings for Queensland were cancelled.

Earlier in the day, BOM forecaster Felim Hanniffy had urged south-east Queensland residents to take necessary safety precautions.

“The level of moisture that’s in the air and the unstable conditions across with that system could facilitate some isolated, very dangerous thunderstorms as they move east during the rest of this afternoon,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane.
